The simple meaning of rhythm is “different lengths of notes.” You may have heard (or thought of) all sorts of different meanings or connotations to this word (rhythm), but it really is as simple as “different lengths of notes,” at its core. We indicate how long or short notes are by using standard note-types, which will be discussed much more fully later on, but the main point is: Can you double a number? Can you cut a number in half? Then you can handle rhythm . . . for the most part.
